PHOTOGRAPHS & IMAGESHere are some photos that mostly look like me. No airbrushing glamour shots here. No young photos of author with windblown hair. After all, I don't want you coming to the airport to pick me up for a reading and looking past my lined 50-ish face for some perky García girl. Please do get permission from the photographer before using. I'm also including one of the images of Sara's trees from Seven Trees as well as a couple of Belkis's woodcuts from A Cafecito Story. More Wonderful Workphotographs by Isaías Orozco-Lang from his book Glimpses of La Yagüita photographs by Polibio Díaz from his book Interiores

I wrote the introduction to Isaías's book of photographs, Glimpses of La Yagüita, after being floored by the work of this young photographer. Isaías spent a season in a barrio in Santiago, Dominican Republic, called la Yagüita, and captured the soul of that comunidad in his images. I include him on my website because I want to promote work I believe in, most especially the work of artists who challenge me to see the world and be transformed by their vision into action and compassion! For more information about Isaías Orozco-Lang's work and to order his book, please go to El León Literary Arts (elleonliteraryarts.org) or to his personal website: isaiasorozco-lang.net. | ||

Polibio Díaz, a Dominican photographer, has a wonderful book, Interiores, with new work that won the V Biennial Del Caribe prize in 2003. Polibio focuses on the interiors of little casitas of the poor in the Dominican Republic, capturing the indestructible zest and playful energy of the people and place. The rococo excesses, the straining for beauty, the underlying lassitude of the images speak to the challenges faced by those whose exterior facade is often all that a tourist or untrained eye sees. I invite you to enter these interiors via Polibio's amazing photographs. To order a copy of the book or contact Polibio Díaz about purchasing his work or reproducing it, please email him directly.
